In May 1864, Sherman led his army from Chattanooga, Tennessee, through northern Georgia, with the goal of capturing Atlanta, a key Confederate supply center. The campaign involved a series of battles, including the Battle of Resaca, the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, and the Battle of Peachtree Creek. After a long siege, the Union army finally captured Atlanta on September 2, 1864.
After resting and resupplying in Atlanta, Sherman's army set out on its "March to the Sea" in November 1864. The goal of the march was to cut off Confederate supply lines and destroy infrastructure in Georgia. The army split into two wings, with one heading towards Savannah and the other towards Milledgeville, the state capital. The Union army successfully captured Savannah on December 21, 1864, effectively ending the Georgia campaign.
In early 1865, Sherman's army began its campaign in the Carolinas, with the goal of capturing the important Confederate cities of Charleston, South Carolina, and Wilmington, North Carolina. The campaign involved a series of battles, including the Battle of Averasborough and the Battle of Bentonville, both in North Carolina. The Union army captured Columbia, the capital of South Carolina, on February 17, 1865, and Wilmington, North Carolina, on February 22, 1865.
After capturing Wilmington, Sherman's army turned north and headed towards Raleigh, the capital of North Carolina. They encountered little resistance along the way and successfully captured Raleigh on April 13, 1865. Just a few days later, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia, effectively ending the Civil War.
The map print showing the routes traversed by each corps of Sherman's army provides a visual representation of the extensive and complex movements involved in these campaigns, and is a valuable tool for understanding the historical significance of these events.
